The provisional results of the first round of the French legislative elections in Martinique, Guadeloupe and French Guiana have been released. They place the Nouveau Front Populaire (NFP) in the lead in these overseas departments, despite a breakthrough by the Rassemblement National (RN).

In Martinique, no candidate managed to secure an absolute majority, so a second round will be held . In the third constituency, two NFP candidates will be in the running: incumbent Johnny Hajjar (37.28%) and Béatrice Bellay (25.26%). In the second round, in the 4th constituency, an RN candidate, Grégory Roy-Larentry, will face the incumbent La France insoumise MP Jean-Philippe Nilor.

The RN did not field a leading candidate in Guadeloupe, but its candidates Laurent Petit and Rody Tolassy qualify for the second round in the 2nd and 3rd constituencies, respectively, against the outgoing NFP and Liot MPs, who came out well ahead. In the 1st and 4th constituencies, two outgoing MPs, Olivier Serva (Liot) and a Socialist invested by the NFP, Elie Califer, will be up against a La France insoumise candidate, Chantal Lérus, and a presidential majority candidate, Jennifer Linon, in the second round.

In French Guiana’s two constituencies, the Democratic and Republican Left candidates – Nupes, nominated by the NFP, Davy Rimane (62.7%) and Jean-Victor Castor (60.2%), each qualified for the second round. Opposite them, two independent candidates, Boris Chong Sit and Sophie Charles, came a long way behind with 16.11% and 25.49% of the vote respectively.

Turnout in these three overseas departments was 32.5%, compared with 26.7% in 2022.

The Ministry of the Interior is due to confirm these results at 8pm on Sunday.
