Samir Geagea, chief of the Lebanese Forces (LF), stated on Monday that the opposition forces “prevented the country from stepping backward by focusing on fortifying the institutions, the army and the internal security forces, securing at least a measure of stability for the country and people over the past four years.”
Geagea was referring to the successful extension of the term of Commander-in-Chief of the Lebanese Army, General Joseph Aoun. Parliament approved a bill last Friday that will keep, for one more year, the heads of the security services in their respective posts at the rank of major general, including the General Director of the Internal Security Forces, General Imad Osman, as well as the General Director of General Security (GS), Elias Baissari.
During a statement issued at the LF’s Christmas Recital in Maarab, Geagea stated that the parliamentary session was “a step forward,” emphasizing the “difficulty of the circumstances, the worsening challenges and the multitude of risks” facing the country. Furthermore, Geagea declared his party’s “full humanitarian solidarity with the people of Gaza,” expressing “deep empathy for their suffering.”
The LF party chief also addressed the situation in southern Lebanon, extending his greetings to “the people in the South, from Tyre to Marjayoun, especially those of Rmeish, Ain Ebel, Qouzah and Alma al-Shaab.”
He pointed out that he also recognizes the extent of his party’s “great faith, unbreakable determination and insistence on continuity to achieve the goals you [the Lebanese people] have entrusted us with.”
