The head of the Lebanese Forces (LF) party, Samir Geagea, stated on Wednesday that his party “insists on extending Commander Aoun’s term.”

During a press conference in Maarab, Geagea highlighted the crucial role of the Army, considering that security is compromised because of the economic crisis and the Hamas attack that occurred on October 7th.

He praised the efforts of Army Commander-in-Chief Joseph Aoun, “who, despite the collapse of the state, managed to handle the affairs of the Lebanese Army as effectively as possible.”

In this context, the LF party chief questioned why “some would want to change the army commander now, as no country changes its army commander in such times.”

He considered the existence of “an agreement against renewing the army commander’s term led by the head of the Free Patriotic Movement, MP Gebran Bassil, whom he referred to as “the tragedy of the Republic.”

According to Geagea, “The only one capable of stopping this conspiracy is Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, and the party will continue working on extending the army commander’s term in parliament.”

Geagea also highlighted that “the caretaker government was affiliated with the axis of resistance and will manipulate the Army leadership as it pleases.”

He believes the aim of the resistance axis is “to turn the leadership into a secret police, which raises concerns from our party about the Army leadership. The axis has not diverted its attention from the Army leadership since the Cedar Revolution of 2005.”
