The Quai d’Orsay, France’s foreign ministry, has formally requested lifting the diplomatic immunity of Rami Adwan, the Lebanese Ambassador in Paris. The request comes in light of an ongoing investigation into allegations of rape and intentional violence involving Adwan, a French diplomatic source told This is Beirut on Thursday, June 8.

“Yes, the request to lift the immunity of the ambassador is official. The Foreign Ministry will announce it with more details later today during a press briefing,” the source said.

Adwan is currently under investigation in France following complaints by two former embassy employees. He could face trial if Lebanon agrees to France’s request to lift his diplomatic immunity.

Earlier this week, the Lebanese foreign ministry dispatched a fact-finding delegation to Paris to follow up on the case.
