Symbol of cultural resistance, like a lighthouse that lightens up Lebanese’s darkest moments, Le Monnot theater had a makeover. Art and theatre lovers have joined hands to keep this symbolic place running. Josyane Boulos leads the show, wearing several hats at the same time, always spreading around an overflowing positive energy.
You recently took over the lead at Le Monnot Theatre. Tell us about your contribution to this space and what are the changes you have made?
Our main challenge is to make Le Monnot theater a place open to production and new projects. It is now open to young emerging artists, whether freshly graduated or looking for their first chance. For instance, the theatre hosted graduation performances by students of the Lebanese University against a symbolic fee. About fifteen short plays have already been performed and the theater atmosphere has been very lively.
We are also developing workshops around the stage professions as well as masterclasses to be held in the theater throughout the year. We encourage trainees to join us throughout the year in order to learn more about theater, be it artistically, technically or administratively.
In order to reach out to a younger audience, we have become very active on social media platforms including Instagram (Le Monnot Official), Facebook (Théâtre Le Monnot) and very soon Tik Tok.
The program at the theater seems to be very busy…
I would say it will still be busy until the end of June 2023! The requests are still coming in, which is very comforting for someone like me, who is passionate about theater. It proves that this art is far from being on the verge of dying out.
Any messages for theater enthusiasts ?
We have selected all plays based on the fact that they would be appealing to the widest audience possible. In fact, we will soon launch a subscription formula for “theatrical enthusiasts”! Come to the theater! There will definitely be something for everyone!
