Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati urged the UN Security Council to “adopt a firm stance towards Israel to halt its technological war against Lebanon.”
He condemned the two days of fatal explosives that targeted Hezbollah members’ walkie-talkies and pagers, killing tens and injuring thousands.
“Since it affects not just Lebanon but all of humanity, the international community must take responsibility for this issue and deter Israel from its aggression,” he said.
At Lebanon’s request, the Security Council will meet urgently tomorrow, Friday. Mikati stressed that “in order to stop Israel’s war of annihilation, it is essential to reach a dissuasive position.”
Additionally, French President Emmanuel Macron called the Prime Minister and denounced “the attacks which have claimed hundreds of victims.”
Macron also called on “all parties to show restraint and avoid escalation, which leads to no solution,” expressing his “solidarity and sympathy with Lebanon in this painful ordeal.”
Mikati had demanded that the Security Council take “a firm position against Israeli aggression.”
Mikati later met with a number of ambassadors accredited to Lebanon, including the British ambassador, asking that they support the country’s formal request to the Security Council.
Mikati asked that “Great Britain adopt a firm position at tomorrow’s Security Council meeting.”
