At least 16 people were killed and 36 were wounded on Monday in a series of “Israeli strikes” on military sites in central Syria, announced the official Sana agency, with an NGO reporting a higher death toll.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), based in the UK but with an extensive network of sources in the war-torn country, put the death toll at 25. The head of the SOHR, Rami Abdel Rahman, stressed that this was “one of the most violent raids” carried out by Israeli aircraft on Syria.

“Thirteen violent explosions rang out in the zone housing scientific research centres in Masyaf where pro-Iranian groups and weapons development experts are present,” the group said in an earlier statement.

“Around 11:20 pm (2020 GMT) on Sunday, the Israeli enemy carried out an air attack from the northwest of Lebanon targeting a number of military sites in the central region,” Sana reported, citing a military source.

“Our air defense shot down some missiles,” said the latter.

Since the start of the civil war in Syria in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes in Masyaf, targeting pro-Iranian groups in particular.
