The Israeli army said that one soldier had been killed and another seriously wounded during an operation in Jenin, in the north of the occupied West Bank, during which a Palestinian was also wounded, according to the official Palestinian agency Wafa.

Captain Alon Sacgiu, aged 22, “fell during an operation in the Jenin area”, the army reported in a short statement, without giving details of the circumstances of his death.

It added that another soldier had been seriously wounded and evacuated to hospital, without giving details.

A young Palestinian was also shot in the face by Israeli forces, according to the Wafa agency.

The army “raided Jenin shortly before midnight and remained deployed until dawn on Thursday in the city and around the refugee camp, with dozens of snipers on the rooftops of commercial buildings and homes, against a backdrop of violent clashes and the sound of explosions”, Wafa added.

Contacted by AFP, the army said it had withdrawn from Jenin but gave no immediate details of its operation.

Witnesses in Jenin told AFP that homemade explosive devices had been placed on a road used by the army and detonated. The night was marked by clashes and exchanges of fire, they said.
