Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati called on Wednesday from Ain al-Tine for an “immediate ceasefire” and the implementation of measures announced by the Lebanese government to enforce UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
He also recommended the “deployment of the Lebanese army in the area south of the Litani River so that it can fully carry out its functions, in coordination with the peacekeeping forces (UNIFIL) present in the region.”
This statement was made following a tripartite meeting involving Mikati, Walid Joumblatt, former leader of the Progressive Socialist Party, and Speaker of the Parliament, Nabih Berri.
The caretaker Prime Minister affirmed Lebanon’s commitment to responding to the call for a ceasefire issued during the United Nations General Assembly meetings by the United States, France, the European Union, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Germany, Australia, Canada, and Italy.
The three leaders agreed to denounce “the Israeli aggression against Lebanon, which has resulted in the deaths of many Lebanese,” emphasizing the need for “unity among the Lebanese in the face of this aggression and national solidarity” in managing the displacement crisis.
In this context, Mikati called on the international community and relevant organizations to assume moral and legal responsibility. He also asked them to respond to the requirements of the support plan proposed by the government’s emergency committee as soon as possible.
