Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati continued his intensive diplomatic meetings in New York as part of his efforts to halt the ongoing war between Hezbollah and Israel.

During talks with his British counterpart Keir Starmer, Mikati underscored the urgency of securing a swift ceasefire with Israel while actively pursuing a diplomatic resolution. Following their discussions on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on Friday, Starmer’s office issued a statement expressing condolences to Mikati for the loss of civilian lives in recent weeks.

“After discussing the escalating conflict in Lebanon, both sides agreed on the importance of an immediate ceasefire and seeking solutions through negotiation,” the statement added.

In a separate meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Mikati emphasized the importance of implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and highlighted the role of UNIFIL—the international forces stationed in southern Lebanon—in maintaining stability. Mikati urged UN humanitarian agencies to offer prompt assistance to Lebanon at this critical juncture.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, after meeting with Mikati, mentioned that they discussed the grave situation in southern Lebanon and its impact on civilians. Von der Leyen stressed the necessity of a diplomatic resolution in alignment with UN resolutions, underlining the immediate need for a ceasefire and reaffirming ongoing support for the Lebanese people affected by the conflict.

In discussions with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, Mikati was briefed on France’s sustained efforts to mediate a ceasefire. Barrot condemned civilian casualties as unacceptable and expressed optimism about averting a full-scale war while announcing plans for a visit to Lebanon to continue discussions.

During a meeting with Jordan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, Mikati expressed gratitude to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan for its steadfast support across all levels and its unwavering commitment to Lebanon.

Mikati also met with a delegation of the American Task Force for Lebanon headed by Ambassador Ed Gabriel.
