More than 24 hours after the Israeli strike on the southern suburbs of Beirut, Hezbollah officially announced the death of Fouad Shokr, Hezbollah’s military leader and an influential adviser to Hassan Nasrallah.

Following the Israeli strike, Hezbollah denied and then confirmed the presence of the military official in the targeted building.

Also known as Hajj Mohsen, Shokr is described as “a major symbol of the resistance” by Hezbollah.

“His great martyrdom will be a powerful impetus for his brother fighters to continue with firmness and courage to preserve the achievements, victories and gains and to reach the goals and hopes to which this great commander aspired,” stressed the Hezbollah statement issued on Wednesday evening.

Hezbollah also announced that it would be organizing Fouad Shokr’s funeral on Thursday afternoon. The funeral is due to begin with a speech by the Secretary General of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, who is expected to comment on the death of his military commander, as well as that of Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas, who was also killed on Wednesday night by an Israeli strike on Tehran.
