ABAAD, the non-profit organization and Resource Centre for Gender Equality, said on Saturday that the rate of femicide in Lebanon in 2023 increased by 300%.

In a statement, ABAAD mentioned that according to the figures obtained from the Internal Security Forces (ISF), “the frequency of violence against women and girls in Lebanon increased in 2023.”

“In this context, the organization stressed the importance of reporting violent crimes and the need for the ISF to respond quickly, investigate them, and refer them to the competent judiciary to issue just and deterring sentences, the statement added.

The NGO said that 29 women were killed in 2023, at a rate of two victims per month, while in 2022 the total number of victims reached 11 women.

The number of incidents of sexual violence committed against women and girls in Lebanon rose to 172 in 2023, an average of 14 victims per month, compared to 121 in 2022.

The number of victims of cyber extortion also increased to 407 in 2023. The Internal Security Forces received 767 complaints on their hotline, an average of 64 complaints per month, while in 2022, the number of complaints amounted to 808.

The organization stressed that “penalties for sexual assault crimes must be tightened to reduce their commission.”
