On the eve of International Women’s Day, UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Joanna Wronecka, accompanied by UN Women’s Representative in Lebanon, Gielan Almessiri, met in Tripoli with youth, women-led groups and non-governmental organizations active in empowering women and girls, peace-building and promoting social stability through dialogue, social inclusion and economic empowerment.

“Creating a conducive environment for enhancing women and girls’ rights and their participation is even more necessary during times of crisis, so that Lebanon can benefit from the full potential of all its citizens,” Wronecka said during her visit to Tripoli on Wednesday.

She also engaged with a group of young women and men at Azm University, who shared how Lebanon’s socio-economic crisis was impacting youth in terms of education and employment opportunities, particularly in Tripoli.

Furthermore, the Special Coordinator, UN Women and the participants highlighted the importance of improving women’s political participation and their engagement in matters of peace and security.

Wronecka also attended the play “I Dream of Dreaming,” organized by Seenaryo, Women Now for Development, and UN Women. The play featured Lebanese and Syrian women and aimed to empower women by promoting peaceful dialogue and inclusion in their communities.

For her part, Almessiri said, “The courage and commitment of the women and men we met in Tripoli today stand as a beacon of hope towards a more just society that empowers, uplifts and advocates for every woman’s voice to be heard and her rights respected.”
