The Greek-Orthodox Metropolitan of Beirut, Archbishop Elias Audi, denounced the behavior of a large portion of people who value “social rank,” respecting only “the rich, feudal, and bourgeois” and “rejecting the poor, needy, and weak.”
“The world is now built on interests, and man is driven by his instincts, desires, and self-centeredness,” he added in his sermon on Sunday. “He only accepts what serves his interests, even to the detriment of others.”
Audi pointed out in this regard that “even countries with a long tradition of defending human rights, freedom, and dignity are guided by their own interests.” “How else can we explain their positions on violence, wars, conflicts, the arms race, nuclear testing, arms trafficking, and the disparity in the distribution of wealth?” he asked.
Audi also called for “acceptance of others” in their differences because all human beings are “created in the image of God.”
