Metropolitan of Beirut and its Greek Orthodox affiliates, Bishop Elias Audi, said that “even electing a president for the country requires one and two years for us, and strenuous efforts, while in democratic countries it is a natural work, and even a duty, undertaken by representatives to ensure the progress of the country,” in a sermon held on Saturday.

Commenting on the August 4th explosion, Audi mentioned, “We are still waiting for the investigation to be completed and the criminal to be declared responsible for the death of hundreds of innocent people, the injury of others who are still suffering and the destruction of thousands of homes, churches and institutions, including our ancient archbishopric, our churches and our schools.”

He added, “For citizens, the state is a refuge and protection, and its duty is to ensure their comfort, security, and future. The state must secure a decent life for its children and care for them as a loving mother would for her children, but our state resigned from its duties decades ago and left the affairs of society to associations and aid.”
