The caretaker government is to convene on Thursday, October 12, to discuss the situation in southern Lebanon, where tensions persist following an exchange of artillery fire between Hezbollah and Israel on Monday.

With the exception of a brief statement issued on Saturday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Lebanese government has yet to issue a statement regarding the escalation in the southern part of the country, which risked dragging Lebanon into a cycle of violence.

The Council of Ministers is also due to discuss the issue of Syrian migration to Lebanon and the massive presence of displaced Syrians in the country, both of which have been overshadowed by the military developments in Gaza.

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati has indirectly urged all cabinet members to take part in the meeting. He said he is counting on “their sense of national duty during this critical time in the country.”

Ministers affiliated with the Free Patriotic Movement (FPM) have been boycotting government meetings for several months, accusing the government of exceeding its constitutional prerogatives in the absence of a President of the Republic.
