On Wednesday, the Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) criticized Caretaker Minister of Energy and Water Walid Fayad, who is close to the Free Patriotic Movement. A day earlier, the minister had announced that Iraq would double the required quantities of petroleum derivatives sent to Lebanon to operate its power plants.

In a statement, the party requested the quantities received by Lebanon to be verified, following statements indicating that fuel volumes received by the plants do not exceed half of the initial quantities sent by Iraq.

The PSP forwarded a series of questions to Fayad: “Is it true that half of the fuel sent by Iraq is lost along the way?”, adding: “Have you opened an investigation into this matter, considering that transparency and accountability are the key principles of your ministry? Has the ministry made an extra effort to verify all the skepticism surrounding the issue of Iraqi fuel? If Iraq fulfills its duty under the agreement, are you fulfilling yours towards the Lebanese people?”

The PSP reiterated that “billions have been wasted in the electricity sector,” urging the Ministry “to care about the survival of the sector and not persist in its collapse.”
