Private sector transportation allowances will rise from LBP 250,000 to LBP 450,000 per working day, on a par with those allocated to civil servants. This was announced on Friday by Mohammad Choucair, on behalf of the economic organizations, and Bechara al-Asmar, President of the General Confederation of Lebanese Workers (GCLW). The two parties conveyed the decision to the caretaker Minister of Labor, Moustafa Bayram, so that it could take its legal course, Choucair and Asmar said in a joint statement.
According to the statement, the two parties reached this agreement at the end of a meeting held on Thursday evening. Choucair and Asmar also stressed that wage increases would be discussed at a later date “due to the negative impact of the Gaza war and the clashes between Hezbollah and Israel in South Lebanon on private companies, as well as the losses incurred by this sector.”
“Companies can no longer bear additional burdens,” the statement read. “This issue will be brought up again once the situation has stabilized and economic activity has returned to normal.”
Choucair and Asmar also announced that consultations will continue between economic bodies and the GCLW and that measures are being taken to strengthen the economic and social situation.
