Nadine Nassif, a rising soprano talent, has recently captivated audiences in Lebanon with a scintillating recital accompanied by pianist Olga Bolun. In this exclusive interview with Agenda Culturel, she shares her journey and aspirations in the world of opera.

“As a child, my days were suffused with melodies, songs and notes that transported me to a magical realm. I recall spending countless hours listening to music and singing in harmony with my favorite artists. My musical journey took a formal turn when I joined a choir. It was then that my fellow choristers advised me to enroll in a conservatory—a pivotal step that broadened my horizons and honed my skills as an opera singer. Music is more than just a passion; it’s an essential part of my being, an inexhaustible source of inspiration and a medium for conveying profound emotions in the world.”

On being a protégé of renowned Lebanese soprano Rima Tawil

“My tutelage under the eminent Franco-Lebanese soprano Rima Tawil has been instrumental to my musical development. Her profound understanding of vocal artistry has enriched my musical comprehension in a significant way. Beyond technical guidance, she has imparted a rich musical heritage, sharing her personal experiences and stories from the world of opera and singing. Her mentorship has taught me the importance of discipline, hard work and perseverance in the demanding field of classical music.”

Vocal range and roles she aspires to perform

“As a coloratura soprano, my vocal range is characterized by its flexibility and the ability to execute rapid vocal runs and wide leaps in pitch. I aim to undertake iconic roles such as the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s ‘Die Zauberflöte’ (‘The Magic Flute’) and Olympia in Offenbach’s ‘Les Contes d’Hoffmann.’ I am also open to contemporary roles that push the boundaries of the genre and incorporate modern elements.”

Recent recital in Lebanon

“My recent recital featured an eclectic selection, including ‘Ave Maria’ by Gounod, ‘Alleluia’ from Mozart’s ‘Exsultate, Jubilate,’ ‘Je veux vivre’ from Gounod’s ‘Roméo et Juliette,’ ‘Sévillana’ from Massenet’s ‘Don César de Bazan,’ ‘L’éclat de rire’ from Auber’s ‘Manon Lescaut,’ ‘E Strano… Ah, fors’è lui… Sempre libera’ from Verdi’s ‘La Traviata,’ and ‘O mio babbino caro’ from Puccini’s ‘Gianni Schicchi.’ Additionally, I performed two Arabic arias, including ‘Ya Ahali Beirut’ and ‘Salam wa Gharam.’”

Upcoming performances

“I am in the midst of preparing for two concerts; one at the National Museum of Beirut on September 30 in collaboration with the Bel Canto Choir, and the second on December 3 at UNESCO. Both events will feature a meticulously curated repertoire of classical and contemporary pieces.”

Her wishes for the future

“One of my most ardent hopes is to contribute to the growth of opera in Lebanon. Opera has a unique capacity to touch hearts and narrate deep stories. Every challenge I overcome only reinforces my resolve to accomplish this mission. I hope that with the support of those who believe in me and the art form I hold dear, my talent will garner the recognition it deserves, serving both music and our culture. I also aspire to perform at Beit Tabaris.”

Nadine Nassif is indeed a rising star, illuminating the cultural landscape of Lebanon with her artistry, passion and vision for the future of opera.
