Johnny Depp ascended to international superstardom through his portrayal of eccentric characters, ranging from the enigmatic Willy Wonka to the swashbuckling Captain Jack Sparrow. However, his turbulent personal life and destructive behavior away from the camera posed a serious threat to the continuity of his illustrious career.

Infusing his roles with his own idiosyncrasies, Johnny Depp has become both a heartthrob and an indie darling, garnering acclaim for poignant performances in films like Edward Scissorhands and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. His career catapulted to unprecedented heights as he headlined Disney’s billion-dollar Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, his depiction of the rum-guzzling Captain Jack Sparrow partly inspired by Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, one of his many muses.

Yet, his tumultuous legal skirmishes with ex-wife Amber Heard have unveiled a private life punctuated by heated disputes, substance abuse and excessive drinking, transforming him into a pariah in Hollywood and casting a shadow over his career.

Born on June 9, 1963, in Owensboro, Kentucky, Depp initially pursued a career in music and even had a stint selling ballpoint pens before exploring acting. His film debut came in 1984 with Wes Craven’s cult thriller A Nightmare on Elm Street. Subsequently, he charmed television audiences as an undercover police officer in the widely popular series 21 Jump Street.

In 1990, Depp captivated audiences with his portrayal of Edward Scissorhands, a kind-hearted, scissor-handed creature who enlivens a small town with his whimsical topiaries and avant-garde hairstyles. This marked one of many collaborations with director Tim Burton, which included Ed Wood, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland.

Depp’s filmography also includes portraying Hunter S. Thompson, the rebellious journalist and drug enthusiast, in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. During the shooting of The Rum Diary, another of Thompson’s works, Depp met and starred opposite Amber Heard in 2011.

The actor has also tackled more intense roles, such as an undercover detective penetrating the mob in the critically acclaimed Donnie Brasco. An Oscar nominee thrice, Depp’s performances as J.M. Barrie in Finding Neverland and in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street earned him significant recognition.

Depp has frequently circled back to his first love, music, collaborating with Oasis, Alice Cooper, and Aerosmith’s Joe Perry. His romantic entanglements include actresses Winona Ryder, supermodel Kate Moss, and French singer and actress Vanessa Paradis, with whom he shares two children.

Despite his successful career, Depp’s lifestyle and finances were chaotic. His indulgences included spending over $30,000 monthly on wine and making extravagant purchases on art and property. He claimed in a 2020 London court case that business managers had embezzled the $650 million he made from Pirates of the Caribbean.

Depp’s 2015 marriage to Heard was short-lived, culminating in a divorce in 2017. In 2020, Depp unsuccessfully sued The Sun for libel after being labeled a “wife beater.” While he admitted to substance abuse, he vehemently denied any violence. However, Depp managed to turn the tables in a US defamation trial two years later, calling the jury’s decision a restoration of his life.

Despite this legal victory, Depp remains a divisive figure in the #MeToo era, which resulted in his removal from the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise. Nevertheless, his triumphant trial verdict has seemingly paved the way for a comeback. Depp portrays King Louis XV in Jeanne du Barry, the opening film of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, delivering his lines entirely in French.

A few days prior to the festival, it was unveiled that Depp had clinched a record-breaking $20 million contract to continue gracing Dior’s fragrance campaigns. Moreover, in an intriguing turn of events, Depp is slated to helm a biographical film about the famed artist Amedeo Modigliani, with none other than Al Pacino in the starring role, in the latter part of the year.
