On August 19, visitors were treated to an immersive art installation at the renowned Prambanan Temple in Yogyakarta. This monumental display was the brainchild of American artist Brian Donnelly, popularly known under the moniker Kaws.

The juxtaposition of Donnelly’s contemporary artistry within such an ancient and revered space offers a profound commentary on the convergence of tradition and modernity. The Prambanan Temple, a gem among Southeast Asian structures, holds the distinction of being one of the largest Hindu temples in the region and has been bestowed the honor of a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is no surprise that a number of visitors came to admire Kaws’ art installation. Indeed, given the artist’s global acclaim and distinct artistic voice, the influx of enthusiasts eager to witness his artwork was entirely anticipated.

Brian Donnelly, better known by his pseudonym Kaws, is an American artist and designer born in 1974. He initially gained fame in the 1990s as a graffiti artist, leaving his distinct mark, which often incorporated a crossed-out pair of eyes, on advertisements in New York City. Over time, Kaws evolved from street art to a refined and recognizable style that spans various forms, including paintings, sculptures and commercial products. One of his most iconic creations is the “Companion” series, featuring humanoid figures with X-ed out eyes. His art often blurs the lines between commercial and fine art, making his works particularly unique and sought after.

Throughout his career, Kaws has collaborated with various global brands, artists and musicians, solidifying his status as a significant and influential figure in contemporary art and popular culture. His works and exhibitions have been displayed in major galleries and institutions worldwide, reflecting his immense international appeal and recognition.
