Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati asserted on Wednesday that contrary to “political accusations that the government is not fulfilling its duty, the government is doing more than what is necessary.”

At the opening of the Council of Ministers session, held in the afternoon at the Grand Serail, the head of cabinet also referred to the Kahaleh affair, congratulating the army on the measures taken to avoid any spillover and stressing that the case is in the hands of military justice.

Mikati also defended the work of his government, saying that it exceeded expectations in managing current affairs and worked actively to achieve the necessary reforms.

Regarding the preliminary report of the forensic audit of the accounts and activities of the Banque du Liban carried out by the Alvarez and Marsal group, Mikati indicated his willingness “to act swiftly on the report’s recommendations, notably by asking the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Justice to take the necessary measures.”

He expressed his determination to assemble experts and former ministers to propose the necessary amendments. The committee will include former Minister Ibrahim Najjar, former Minister Shakib Qortbawi, Professor Nasri Diab, Professor Hassan Saleh and Professor Abdel-Hafiz Mansour.
