“Reporters Without Borders” called on the international community to “pressure to ensure Israel’s accountability” for the killing of Lebanese journalist Issam Abdallah six months ago in southern Lebanon, where also six journalists were injured, including two reporters for Agence France-Presse (AFP).

“It is unacceptable after all the investigations” which concluded that Abdallah was “killed in an Israeli shelling, that the Israeli army has not been held accountable so far and no steps have been taken towards achieving justice,” said the Middle East bureau chief of the organization Jonathan Dagher to AFP, adding that “this kind of impunity puts journalists at risk.”

On October 13, 2023, two consecutive strikes targeted a group of seven journalists on the outskirts of the town of Alma al-Shaab in Lebanon near the border with Israel, resulting in the death of Reuters Lebanon correspondent Issam Abdallah and the injury of six other journalists.
