General Manager of the Port of Beirut Omar Itani announced on Tuesday that the port would be working around the clock to complete the formalities required to clear imported food products through customs, in order to ensure food safety.

In a statement, he said that all port staff would be on hand to complete the formalities for imported food products placed on the port’s premises, in response to a call from the Food Importers’ Union to safeguard the food safety of the Lebanese.

Earlier in the day, the Syndicate of Food Importers, chaired by Hani Bohsali, urged the relevant ministries and departments, in view of the delicate circumstances Lebanon is going through, to take exceptional and rapid measures to speed up customs clearance and formalities for imported food products at the port and deliver them to purchasers for storage in risk-free warehouses in Lebanon, in order to preserve the food security of the Lebanese.
