Indirect negotiations in Oman on the nuclear issue between Iran and the United States have reportedly been suspended. One might claim they were suspended by mutual agreement, but it would be more accurate to say that it was due to considerations linked to the interests of each of the two countries.

Tehran is stalling and does not seem to want to make any progress on the issue with an American administration that is unlikely to remain in place after the November 2024 presidential elections. Not to mention the fact that the Islamic Republic is seeking to multiply its gains by stepping up the pressure on Washington through its proxies in the region, whether in the Red Sea or Iraq.

At the same time, US President Joe Biden, who is running for a second term, shares the same mindset, but for different reasons. His administration fears that progress in talks with Iran in the context of the Gaza war could adversely affect his campaign, while the battle between the Democrats and Republicans is in full swing.
