Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League, praised President Joseph Aoun’s election and voiced confidence that Lebanon is “poised for rapid progress unlike anything witnessed in recent years.”
During his visit to Lebanon, Aboul Gheit underscored the urgency of forming a new government and extended an invitation for President Aoun to address the Arab League’s Council of Permanent Representatives or the Council of Ministers.
The remarks came following Aboul Gheit’s meeting with President Aoun at Baabda Palace, where he congratulated the President on his election.
Aboul Gheit praised President Aoun’s leadership and extensive experience, particularly in his prior role as army chief, and expressed optimism about Lebanon’s future. He also hoped for a swift government formation to enable the country’s political and economic recovery.
President Aoun thanked Aboul Gheit for his support, emphasizing his commitment to working collaboratively to restore stability and rebuild trust in Lebanon. He reiterated his intent to implement the reforms outlined in his inaugural speech.
Meetings with Lebanese Officials
Earlier in the day, Aboul Gheit met with Prime Minister Najib Mikati at the Governmental Palace. Discussions included Lebanon’s political situation and steps toward national recovery.
Aboul Gheit spoke to reporters afterward and reaffirmed his optimism for Lebanon. He expressed hope for the swift designation of a new prime minister, marking a significant step toward stability. “I foresee a bright future for Lebanon as its institutions align to tackle longstanding challenges,” he said.
In Ain el-Tineh, Aboul Gheit met Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and congratulated him on the successful presidential election. Their discussions addressed political developments in Lebanon and the region.
Aboul Gheit reaffirmed the Arab League’s steadfast support for Lebanon, emphasizing the country’s pivotal role in the Arab world. He expressed confidence in Lebanon's ability to overcome obstacles and chart a path toward prosperity.
