- Serious Moves to Implement Ceasefire Required by Jan. 27

With the January 27 deadline for the application of the ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel drawing closer, apprehension is growing about a possible resumption of hostilities that wreaked havoc in southern Lebanon and Beirut’s southern suburb.
According to informed sources, Lebanon should take serious steps to start implementing the terms of the ceasefire accord, including the requisition of Hezbollah’s arms and the destruction of its military infrastructure south of the Litani, in the remaining period of the truce. Political action, starting with the election of a president of the Republic on January 9, is also required to show the goodwill of the authorities.
The aim is to rebuild confidence in Lebanon and its capacity to carry out its engagements, the sources said, adding that procrastination and lack of action would discourage the countries engaged in helping Lebanon, notably France and the United States, who would give up their efforts, signaling that they're despondent of Lebanese politicians.
A lack of action within the remaining time of the 60-day truce, inked on November 27, could also increase the risk of the resumption of Israeli strikes against suspected Hezbollah targets across Lebanon. However, a show of good will could lead to the extension of the truce, the sources added.
Although the ceasefire is fragile amid Israel’s incessant violations, the sources indicate that it is not in the interest of any party to return to military confrontations.
