A car bomb explosion at a police station killed a police officer and injured others north of the Syrian capital, Damascus, on Wednesday, the interior ministry said.

The explosion of the vehicle in Barzeh suburb is the latest security incident, including blasts targeting military or civilian vehicles, that occur intermittently in Damascus.

A “lieutenant colonel… of the Damascus police… was martyred after a vehicle exploded in the Barzeh police station,” the ministry said on its Telegram messaging app channel.

Earlier in the day the ministry had said the explosion wounded an officer and four other policemen.

“Investigations are ongoing to discover the circumstances of the incident,” it added in the earlier statement, posting images of a mangled, burnt-out vehicle.

Last month, state media reported a car bombing rocked another Damascus district, with the interior ministry saying two people were slightly injured.

The April 2 car bombing took place in the Mazzeh area, which is home to United Nations headquarters, several embassies and restaurants.

The conflict in Syria has killed more than 500,000 people, displaced millions and battered the country’s infrastructure and industry.

While the front lines have mostly quietened in recent years, large parts of the country’s north remain outside government control.
