EU’s Foreign Affairs chief Josep Borrell has underlined the need for a full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 which, he stressed, would “pave the way for a comprehensive settlement” along the Lebanese-Israeli border amid rising tensions in the region.
Speaking at a press conference on the second day of his visit to Lebanon on Thursday, Borrell said the Lebanese people seek “stability and peace, not war” and highlighted the critical role of the Lebanese leadership in overcoming internal obstacles.
“Tensions in the Middle East have significant negative consequences for Lebanon and its people,” Borrell told reporters following a meeting with Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib.
He also reiterated EU’s commitment to supporting Lebanon through its current challenges.
However, he underscored that only the Lebanese can resolve their internal political crises, urging leaders to act in the nation’s best interest by “restoring the presidency and other governmental institutions.”
In addition to Bou Habib, the EU official has met caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and Army Commander General Joseph Aoun.
Borrell’s meeting with Berri was particularly focused on Israel’s continued aggression.
“Lebanon does not seek war, but it has the right and the ability to defend itself,” Berri commented after the meeting, adding that the Lebanese government remains committed to constitutional processes despite the persisting presidential vacancy.
In his talks with Bou Habib, Borrell reiterated that lasting peace in the region requires a settlement of the Palestinian cause and the end of Israeli occupation.
Bou Habib echoed this sentiment, underscoring Lebanon’s commitment to Resolution 1701 and to achieving sustainable peace.
