On the fourth anniversary of the Beirut port blast, which occurred on August 4, 2020, several local political figures took to social media to mark the occasion.
Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri asserted that only by uncovering the truth about the “port crime” can justice be served for the victims and Beirut be restored to its former glory.
For his part, former Deputy Prime Minister and Lebanese Forces MP Ghassan Hasbani assured that justice would prevail, even if it took some time, emphasizing that it could manifest in different forms.
“It is time for the truth to be revealed and justice to be served in the Beirut port blast case, as a redress for the martyrs, the injured, those affected, and for all Lebanese people,” stated the leader of the Progressive Socialist Party, Teymour Joumblatt.
The leader of the Marada Movement, Sleiman Frangieh, stressed the need to shed light on the incident with a sense of responsibility and without politicization.
Additionally, Gebran Bassil, the head of the Free Patriotic Movement, called on Lebanon’s judges, particularly those involved in the port blast investigation, to do their job and issue an indictment. He added that they should be ashamed and step down if they fail to do so.
Bassil also suggested that there is a convergence of internal and external interests preventing the truth from being unveiled. Therefore, he believes that the matter goes far beyond negligence and professional misconduct.
Meanwhile, the Kataeb Party reminded that four years after the port explosion, justice is paralyzed and accountability is absent.
“This is a national issue that cannot be forgotten despite intimidation, manipulation, the absence of a state held captive, and a powerless and paralyzed judicial system,” the party stated.
