Samir Geagea, leader of the Lebanese Forces (LF) party, criticized Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri for unveiling a new approach to the presidential election process.
In a statement released on Thursday, Geagea accused Berri of proposing a “trilogy” of consultation, consensus and election, which he claims would reduce the election to a mere formality. Geagea argued that this approach “violates the Lebanese Constitution,” which mandates elections without preconditions.
Geagea also drew parallels between Berri’s proposal and a previous slogan, “army, people and resistance,” suggesting that both undermine the role and responsibilities of the state. He lamented the failure of efforts to reach consensus over the presidential election, attributing it to obstruction by political factions, including the Hezbollah-led camp, the Moumana’a axis.
Geagea emphasized the importance of adhering to the Constitution by holding elections independently of any consensus that might favor a specific candidate, particularly from Hezbollah.
