On Wednesday, the Caretaker Minister of Energy and Water, Walid Fayad, launched a new call for tenders via the public procurement platform for the construction of a solar power plant using photovoltaic cells with a total capacity of 8 megawatts. The plant will be financed entirely from the budget of the Ministry of Energy and Water and will be connected to the national grid of Electricité du Liban (EDL).

He pointed out that this station will be built on the course of the Beirut River in the Lebanese capital. He specified that it will be the largest solar energy project built in Lebanon to date, bearing in mind that the Ministry of Energy and Water had previously established a first station on the course of the Beirut river, with a capacity of 1 megawatt, which has been working perfectly since its creation.

He recalled that his ministry attaches great importance to the development of the solar energy market in Lebanon since the total amount installed to date has reached around 1,500 megawatts, representing 20% of Lebanon’s energy consumption. The ministry has now completed the preparation of the project for the years 2024-2030, which aims to exceed the threshold of 30% renewable energy by 2030.

The ministry has called on companies specializing in the solar energy sector to take part in this project “because of its positive impact, especially as the financial terms of the contract have been improved, enabling contractors to settle their debts at the exchange rate in force on the date of the contract, thus protecting them from the risks of currency fluctuations.”
