The vibrant Hamra district of Beirut recently became the stage for a significant event in Lebanon’s art world with the inauguration of DiGen Art, the country’s first gallery entirely dedicated to digital art.
Founded by Alex Rayes and Camille Hajjar, DiGen Art—short for Digitally Generated Art—positions itself as a catalyst in the digital artistic movement across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The gallery’s mission is ambitious: it aims to reconnect the MENA region with its historical roots in the algorithmic adventure while propelling it into the current and future global digital revolution.
“At DiGen, we are captivated by the convergence of art and technology, which opens a broad spectrum of artistic expressions ranging from illustration to augmented reality, encompassing digital animation and art created by artificial intelligence (AI),” states Alex Rayes, co-founder of DiGen Art.
Located in the heart of Beirut, the exhibition space transcends the traditional boundaries of a conventional art gallery. Designed as a dynamic laboratory and learning space, it fosters experimentation with new technologies. Visitors have the opportunity to explore an ever-growing specialized library and engage in a diverse program of events, including hackathons, conferences and workshops.
The gallery showcases a variety of digital artworks from static creations to animations, all produced using modern digital tools. Furthermore, DiGen Art shares its private collection of digital art spanning from the 1970s to the present, providing a chronological overview of the evolution of digital art.
Camille Hajjar, co-founder of the gallery, emphasizes the significance of this initiative, “The progressive establishment of a digital art collection defines our digital identity within the Web3 ecosystem and enriches the art world with an additional dimension that nourishes and transforms it.”
