In the heart of Beirut, the Carré d’artistes gallery redefines the color red, traditionally symbolizing anger and blood, as a beacon of artistic resilience and cultural defiance. Their latest exhibition, entitled Red, is scheduled to run from November 30, 2023, to February 29, 2024, coinciding with significant cultural events such as Christmas and Valentine’s Day, while symbolizing the Lebanese flag.

Amidst regional turmoil, Carré d’artistes emerges as a bastion of artistic expression, curating a collection of works that illustrate the depth and versatility of red. Featured artists bring diverse interpretations to the theme. Odile Escolier presents her slender, Giacometti-inspired works, while Sophie Costa and Kikayou infuse upcycling and Pop Art into their creations. The exhibition also showcases Naï’s surrealistic and poetic style alongside Naen’s ethereal and abstract expressions, all unified by shades of vermillion, garnet, ruby and carmine.

Sculpture, too, finds its place in this celebration of art. Novarino’s Kiss-Kiss puzzle, Zed’s Be Lover, Be Dreamer, Be Free flex sculptures, Ravi’s Banksy-inspired pieces, and Virginie Laurent’s vivid red hearts and Mickeys, all contribute to the exhibition’s vibrant spirit.

Red at Carré d’artistes is more than an exhibition; it is a bold statement of art’s power in challenging times. It invites viewers to explore the myriad connotations of red, from passion and strength to hope and renewal. Each piece in the exhibition stands as a testament to resilience, reminding us that art remains a luminous force in even the darkest of times, continually challenging and inspiring.
