Head of the Lebanese Forces (LF) Samir Geagea questioned on Wednesday the remarks attributed to Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, who is said to have called on political parties to hold “a dialogue table” as a prerequisite to any parliamentary session to elect a president.

“If this information circulating in the press on Wednesday proves to be true, it will mean a return to the starting point,” Geagea deplored in a statement, adding that “it will mean that the resistance’s (Hezbollah’s) decision to obstruct the presidential elections has not changed.”

As far as Geagea is concerned, any call for dialogue would be sterile and pointless and would simply prove that Hezbollah still wishes to impose its candidate, Sleiman Frangieh, for the presidency, after more than a year’s void in the top post.

The LF chief stressed that the so-called dialogue between parliamentary blocs has never been interrupted, “But unfortunately, it has not led to any results amid the Moumanaa Axis’ insistence on having the leader of the Marada movement be president, or no one…”

Geagea reiterated that “the only way to have a president is for Berri to convene, as soon as possible, an open parliamentary session that continues until a president is elected.”

“Let the Moumanaa Axis keep its candidate for as long as it wishes, and let the other parliamentary blocs nominate whoever they wish, and we will all congratulate whoever wins through election and consider him the new president,” he concluded.
