Since the start of the war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas on October 7, the Lebanese-Israeli-UN tripartite committee temporarily suspended its regular monthly meetings at the headquarters of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in Ras al-Naqoura, southern Lebanon.

According to a well-informed source who spoke to This Is Beirut on condition of anonymity, the last meeting of the committee, which brings together Lebanese and Israeli officers under UNIFIL supervision, took place on September 12.

“The Naqoura meetings will only resume when the situation in South Lebanon and the wider region stabilizes,” the source said.

The tripartite committee played a pivotal role in the talks that resulted in an agreement on the demarcation of the maritime borders between Lebanon and Israel. Its regular monthly meetings were also meant to reduce border tensions between Lebanon and the Hebrew state and ensure the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, adopted in 2006, which calls for a complete cessation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.
