Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati chaired a meeting at the Grand Serail on Tuesday to discuss the recent wave of displaced Syrians arriving in Lebanon. The meeting was attended by the Caretaker Minister of the Displaced, Issam Charafeddine, the Acting Head of General Security, Elias al-Baissari, and the Secretary General of the Higher Defense Council, Mohammed Mustapha.
At the end of the meeting, Charafeddine highlighted “this new phenomenon, which has been taking place for the past three weeks, whereby refugees are using illegal crossing points on the border with Syria.”
“We discussed ways of countering these methods in a studied manner, notably through border surveillance and cooperation with caimacams and municipalities to hold to account anyone who takes in an illegal refugee,” says Charafeddine.
He points out that the Acting Director of General Security has also been instructed to contact the Syrian authorities to resolve this problem.
