Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros al-Rai addressed the security services during his Sunday sermon. He called for strengthening the protection of the Lebanese borders, and pointed out that officials should strip themselves of their personal interests.
Rai asked, “Why is Lebanon deprived of electing a president? Why is the pact that stipulates that the President of the Republic be a Maronite Christian, the Prime Minister a Sunni Muslim, and the Speaker of Parliament a Shiite Muslim violated?”
He added, “We are committed to the national constants, that is, the constitutional institutions, all of them, the charter of coexistence with equality, the sovereignty of Lebanon over all its lands.”
