Commander of the International Mission of UNIFIL in Lebanon, General Aroldo Lázaro, said “as the events of the past month have shown us, the stability in South of Lebanon remains fragile,” adding “but thanks to the peacekeepers’ work, both civilian and military, we have been able to gain the trust and commitment of the parties, facilitating coordination and communication during the rocket launch and response, and helping to prevent things from escalating any further.”

“As peacekeepers, our role is to create space to find a way for a political solution between the parties, reduce tensions and prevent conflict that may interfere with political solutions,” Lázaro said during the commemoration of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the International Day of Peacekeepers organized by The International Emergency Forces in Naqoura.

“Peace is not something that is imposed from the outside, but it starts from within – within the individual or within society. This year’s theme is “Peace Begins with Me”,” he concluded.
