Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati chaired a ministerial meeting about electricity at the Grand Serail on Monday afternoon, in the presence of caretaker Minister of Energy Walid Fayad, Minister of Finance Youssef Khalil, Minister of Industry Georges Bouchikian, Minister of Public Works and Transport Ali Hamiyé, Minister of Justice Henry Khoury, Minister of Telecoms Johnny Corm, Minister of Culture Mohammad Mortada and the Chairman of Electricité du Liban (EDL), Kamal Hayek.

Hayek presented the stages of implementation of the electricity development plan and the factors for success. He was then asked to determine the new tariff based on the latest exchange rate set by the Banque du Liban (using the Sayrafa platform), with effect from July 1, 2023, rather than Sayrafa plus 20%.

EDL was also asked to extend the implementation of the Board of Directors’ decision of July 6, 2023 on the modification of electricity tariffs so that the adjustment allowance, the subscription and the subscription fee are reduced by 25% and that the KwH is calculated at 26 cents instead of 27 cents, for invoices issued until June 2023.

Moreover, EDL was asked to intensify discussions with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to settle the electricity charges of displaced Syrians. Otherwise, the power will be cut off in camps.
