The Lebanese Army Command issued a statement on Friday in response to a decision released by the U.S. Department of the Treasury concerning the alleged involvement of a Lebanese Army officer in the leaking of intelligence information during the current year.
The Army Command noted that it had not been notified of the matter through the established official communication channels.
In its statement, the Command reaffirmed that all officers and personnel of the Lebanese Armed Forces carry out their national duties with full professionalism, responsibility, and discipline, in accordance with the directives issued by the Army leadership.
It further stressed that the loyalty of military personnel lies exclusively with the military institution and the Lebanese state, emphasizing their commitment to fulfilling their duties away from any external considerations or pressures.
Southern Suburbs Intelligence Office
The officer in question has been identified as Colonel Samer Hamadeh, head of the Army Intelligence office in Beirut’s southern suburbs.
According to previous information provided to This is Beirut by a security source, the office in question has reportedly been “exclusively run by Shiite officers” and is said to play a role in coordinating with Hezbollah’s Coordination and Liaison Unit.
Colonel Samer Hamadeh was appointed to replace General Maher Raad as head of the Lebanese Army Intelligence office in Beirut’s southern suburbs.
In August 2025, the Lebanese Armed Forces dismissed General Raad, who had headed the unit since 2017. According to a report by Israel’s Alma Research and Education Center, his removal was linked to alleged involvement in weapons and drug smuggling. These claims have not been independently verified.
Raad was previously described as being responsible for coordination with Hezbollah’s Liaison and Coordination Unit. He hails from the town of Jbaa in southern Lebanon, the hometown of Hezbollah parliamentary bloc leader Mohammad Raad.
