Lebanon’s parliamentary session on Tuesday was marked by a heated verbal clash after MP Firas Hamdan was cut off mid-speech while denouncing Lebanon’s relationship with Iran. Hamdan accused political forces of turning southern Lebanese communities into bargaining chips in regional power struggles, arguing that such alignments have brought destruction rather than protection or political gains.
His remarks immediately sparked objections from Hezbollah-aligned MPs. MP Ali al-Miqdad dismissed the intervention as electoral posturing, while MP Ali Fayyad argued that political criticism of what he described as a “friendly state” should not be voiced inside Parliament, suggesting such positions be expressed instead through press conferences. The exchange escalated before MP Samy Gemayel stepped in, warning against suppressing debate and stressing the importance of allowing MPs to speak freely within the chamber.
