Major General Diodato Abaniara, commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), on Thursday reaffirmed the mission’s commitment to supporting the Lebanese Army (LAF) in extending its authority, maintaining security, and protecting residents of southern Lebanon.
Responding to questions about UNIFIL’s priorities following the Security Council’s ongoing discussions on mandate renewal, Abaniara highlighted that the mission remains committed to documenting violations and implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
Speaking during a visit to South Governor Mansour Daou in Saida, his first official meeting since taking command, Abaniara emphasized his focus on “strengthening the foundations of peace and stability in southern Lebanon.”
He thanked local authorities for their cooperation and stressed the need for teamwork to achieve security and stability.
