US Congressman Darrell Issa affirmed on Friday that “this is a new day for Lebanon,” highlighting that “significant progress has been made in recent days.”

Speaking after his meeting with Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, Issa described the developments as a “rebirth for Lebanon,” focusing on reconstruction efforts and urgent needs across the country, including vital sectors such as electricity and water.

Addressing Hezbollah’s refusal to disarm, Issa emphasized that “the Lebanese Cabinet made a decision on this matter, which the government endorsed. This decision is based on the 1989 Taif Accord, which calls for all militias to surrender their weapons.”

“The Lebanese Armed Forces are working to implement this, and I believe every loyal Lebanese citizen wants to see weapons under the control of the Lebanese state,” he added.

Issa expressed confidence that “any responsible Lebanese person wants to ensure disarmament takes place,” and stated that the US “trusts the Lebanese Army will fulfill its duties by the end of August.”

When asked about his outlook for Lebanon’s future, Issa replied, “Yes, I see a new birth for Lebanon, and that is why I came here now. The decisions being made now haven’t been taken in decades, and I firmly believe these decisions will be realized.”

Issa also revealed that discussions touched upon ongoing negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), noting that “this would not be possible without an effective and united government.”
