The General Confederation of Labor (CGTL) announced on Wednesday that it is suspending its nationwide strike following a meeting with President Joseph Aoun.

Speaking after the talks, CGTL head Bechara al-Asmar said the decision came after the president pledged to place the union’s demands on the agenda of Thursday’s Cabinet session in Baabda.

“We came seeking concrete results, and the president assured us that he would follow up and prioritize our concerns,” al-Asmar said. “In response, we have chosen to suspend the strike as a goodwill gesture to allow space for meaningful progress.”

The CGTL has been pressing the government to raise the national minimum wage, rejecting its latest proposal of $312 (LBP 28 million) as woefully inadequate. According to the union, the offer covers less than 30% of a family’s basic needs.
