The Iranian ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani, visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) a day after being summoned by Minister Youssef Rajji on Tuesday.
During the meeting, the Ministry's Secretary General, Hani Chmaytelli, reminded the ambassador of the need to respect the fundamental rules of international diplomacy, in particular the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of states.
He also stressed that all diplomatic missions must adhere to the provisions of the Vienna Convention, which governs relations between states and guarantees national sovereignty.
This case follows remarks by the Iranian diplomat on his X account, which the Lebanese authorities deemed inappropriate. In his publications, Ambassador Amani warned against disarming Hezbollah, considering that any disarmament project is a “clear conspiracy against states,” since countries that give in to disarmament demands, “become vulnerable to attacks and occupation, as has happened in Iraq, Libya, and Syria.”
The Minister of Foreign Affairs was quick to summon the ambassador, who failed to appear on Wednesday, citing scheduling reasons.
Amani then asserted that Tehran respects Lebanon's sovereign decisions, particularly concerning the sensitive issue of weapons held by Hezbollah. In a televised interview, he insisted that Iran was not seeking to influence Lebanese domestic politics.
