Lebanon Condemns Attack on UNIFIL Forces in Rmeish
On Saturday, following an Israeli strike on a UNIFIL car near the southern town of Rmeish, Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati expressed to General Aroldo Lázaro, the Commander of the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces in Lebanon, his solidarity with the international forces, strongly condemning the attack that left four injured.

Mikati was informed by General Lázaro that UNIFIL is conducting investigations into the incident to uncover its circumstances.

Abdullah Bou Habib, the Caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, did the same, announcing the preparation of an urgent complaint to the Security Council. Bou Habib called on countries “committed to peace and regional security” to ensure the safety of UN personnel, protect civilians and intervene promptly to stop Israeli violations by fully implementing Security Council Resolution 1701.

The ministry “strongly condemns this violation of international law and humanitarian principles.” It particularly denounces the targeting of peacekeepers from the United Nations, following a series of attacks on journalists, medical personnel, children, women and civilians, according to a recent statement.

This comes just after the United Nations Security Council called on Monday for a Ramadan ceasefire in Gaza in a controversial vote during which the United States abstained.
