A gunman opened automatic gunfire at worshippers outside a mosque in the town of Bar Elias in the Bekaa region following the Friday prayer, killing one person and injuring several others.
According to al-Markazia News Agency, the assailant, whose family name was identified as Itani, may have been killed in the incident. He is believed to suffer from nervous depression and mental illness.
Bekaa Governor Judge Kamal Abou Jawde is said to be following up on the circumstances of the incident in which Ali Chibli was killed and several others wounded with the security forces and investigators.
Bar Elias municipality police were mobilized and placed on full alert to maintain peace and defuse tensions.
Judge Abou Jawde called on the victim’s family to show patience and fortitude, while urging “Bar Elias residents to exercise self-restraint and act responsibly and with diligence.”
