UNESCO recently awarded actor and director Kassem Istanbouli the 2023 Sharjah Award for Arab Culture and Arts. This prize is a symbol of recognition for his prominent contribution to the Arab culture.

The international committee of experts in the fields of culture and arts has selected the work of Kassem Istanbouli, founder of the Lebanese National Theatre, among many nominations. This choice was based on his contribution to the creation of an independent culture and arts network in Lebanon, including the restoration of abandoned cinemas in South and North Lebanon. Moreover, the artist has organized international cinema, theater, and music festivals and organized workshops for children. He has also established international bridges to promote the exchange of artistic experiences and dialogue, contributing to the dissemination of Arab artistic experiences and culture in the world. The award will be handed to Mr. Istanbouli at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on June 26, 2023.

Sharjah Award for Arab Culture and Arts was created in 1998 by the initiative of Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi in order to celebrate Arab creators and intellectuals. This year’s 2023 award marks its 19th edition.
