During an interview on Sunday, Israeli far-right heritage minister Amichai Eliyahu said dropping an atomic bomb on Gaza is “one of the possibilities”.

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu quickly reacted, saying in a statement that the minister’s words were “not based in reality” and that “Israel and the IDF are operating in accordance with the highest standards of international law to avoid harming innocents”.

According to Israel’s Army Radio, Mr Eliyahu was shortly after “suspended until further notice”.

Yair Lapid, leader of the opposition in Israel, called the comment a “shocking and crazy statement by an irresponsible minister”.
